5.0 out of five stars Great product for the price, July 26, 2009
By J. Lam (Los Angeles, CA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black (Electronics) .

One of my requirements is to have fitted speakers. I do not have external speakers nor do I like more tangled wires. The speakers sound better than my old Viewsonic VA1912wb I replaced. That’s a welcoming fact. Firstly, there was many of waviness on screen. The troubleshooting guide suggested video connection as the issue. Turns out that it was my old VGA cable (I did not want to craw behind the computer firstly.). Once I hooked up with the new cable provided, it started working perfectly. I am running Windows XP Media Center. After I turned off and on my computer, it recognized the new monitor and reset the resolution and refresh rate profile. It now runs at 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz. No driver is obliged. I was scared that I could have to update my video driver since I have a four yr+ old computer but I do not. With HDMI, DVI, and SPDIF Audio Output, it’ll be more than able to manage my future computer (definitely not with Vista, though).

Of course, not everything is perfect with this monitor. The buttons and OSD menu aren’t great. But they’re inside my expectation depending on other reviews I mentioned before. Also, once you move away from the center view by, more than 45 degrees, the picture quality starts degrading quickly. It means that if you want to show someone standing behind you the pictures on your screen, he/she could have to bend down, sit down, or step back to appreciate what you’re trying to show. They are just minor faults that I am wanting to live with for what I am wanting to pay. In general, I am a happy buyer.

August 11, 2009 Update:

Shortly after I wrote the initial impression above, I started to experience many flickering with the screen. This is my description to ASUS buyer Service:

“While in use, sometimes monitor could flicker. Anywhere from showing multi color vertical bands (partial or full screen) to black or white screen. On occasion it is vertical and horizontal lines covering the full screen (forming concentrated grid pattern). This is a brand new monitor (in use for one week). I am using VGA cable. I have unplugged and plugged the cable and made sure connection is good. I have updated my video card driver to the new variant but didn’t crack the problem. Saw this posted in forum but no solution replied. If not resolved, may have to return the monitor.”

ASUS replied in about two days making some number of suggestions. I followed the advice the best I could. See my successive answer of findings:

“Firstly, could you tell us when and after what action this problem occurred?
1. When the computer 1st boot up. Does not matter if the monitor is on 1st or on after boot up. The screen flickers with vertical multi color bands on the right or on occasion the whole screen. At times there are both vertical and horiztonal bands that form white fabric like pattern. Length could last for two sec to good five seconds.
2. When in use throughout any computer session. Occasional. On occasion happens while surfing the net. Not generally repeatable. In one specific session, every time I went to dpreview.Com, it flickered. But it did not happen again since.

Secondly, press Splendid key on LCD about three seconds to load the default settings.
Did it and no change.

Please replace another graphic card.
Not possible but I have another laptop to test with. This laptop is much newer. One yr old. When switch to ASUS as external monitor, the same flickering happened, for long or short length. But other than that, I didn’t experience other cases.

Thirdly, check if there’s any updated BIOS or driver for your other PC parts.
Updated BIOS.

Now the only times that it flickers are when the computer 1st boots up or when it goes in and out of screen saver or when the monitor is 1st turned on. I have not observed other in session interruptions as before.

Otherwise change this LCD to another PC to test.”

Today, ASUS told me that this can be faulty. I have proceeded to replace my unit via Amazon. Will update again at some point. Up to this point, ASUS buyer service was prompt.

August 15, 2009:

Requested for a substitute on Aug 11. Received a new unit two days afterward. Plugged it in. Not a single problem has been observed. All flickering was gone since. I have to commend the excellent buyer services from both ASUS and Amazon. Could not be happier.

4.0 out of five stars nice value, August 13, 2009
By EDW (NJ, USA) See all my reviews () This review is from: ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black (Electronics) PROS:
Every video connector you could possibly want
23″
Bright
Audio is adequate for a monitor
Dedicated input choose button
No evident dead pixels (knock wood)
Cables included: DSUB, DVI, male/male audio, AC power

CONS:
Restricted vertical looking at angle!
Cumbersome menu / buttons
Greatly polished bezel & base scratch easily
Volume control buried in the menus
No LED backlighting (though not advertised as such)

OTHER:
This is many of monitor for the money! Blows everything in its price range away. If you need a general function monitor NOW and can get it cheap (rebate, free shipping, no tax) I recommend it. Though if you may be able to wait, do as LED backlighting is coming which will give you a possibly more economical, dependable, inexpensive, lighter, and thinner monitor with considerably better color. I scratched the base before I could turn it on for the 1st time, not a big fan of the greatly polished plastic motif. Volume is adequate if you turn it way up (85 or more). Biggest con is the vertical looking at angle no matter how I tilt it I can not get rid of the “dark sky” effect. It is nearly as if there’s no backlighting at the top, only at the bottom. This is common with most modern LCD monitors though. Base isn’t especially flimsy, no vertical modification, tilt range is good. I am also not a big fan of the current widescreen fad, and think a square monitor could be ideal. Have seen 1920 x 1200 in stores and favor that 16:10 part percentage to this 16:9, but they are still rather costly. Note: this is a plug n play monitor and does not require a driver in XP! as well, the box it comes in should easily survive pretty rough shipping as it’s tough with lots of bubble inside. Double boxed mine which made me feel better about it is journey home.

3.0 out of five stars Poor looking at Angle, June 11, 2010
By Leo “Katphish” (Norwich, NY, United States) See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME) This review is from: ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black (Electronics) I bought this monitor upgrading from an old CRT (18 inch Trinitron from Dell). Because I goed from CRT to LCD and from 4:3 to 16:9, there were many of new variables to think about to ensure I got a monitor that pleased me. I studied the specifications on some monitors in the $200 range, considering models from $180 up to about $250 and more. I got this model because it looked like a steal. The specifications were all there: two ms answer time, 23 inches of screen real estate, full HD, high contrast ration, you name it. It also got decent reviews online.

The trouble is that whenever you purchase an item like this completely online, you’re purchasing depending on numbers, word of mouth, and other finally unreliable resources of info. You may want to know upfront that manufacturers use different ways of computing these metrics. As an example, you can not compare contrast rations between manufacturers reliably. Such a comparison may be an indication of a real difference in quality, or it may be meaningless. It is impossible to know. In fact, you can not compare contrast ratios between models made by the SAME maker from different years! if it is the same MODEL! This leaves us buyers in a real pinch. Particularly when purchasing ONLINE.

When I got my monitor, I was firstly impressed with the size of the screen. The 16:9 format is really so much better. It is great for movies and it is better for the extra desktop space. Teamed with Windows 7′s nifty windows that snap to the sides of the screen, comparing two browsers or papers is really nice. The vertical height of this screen is about the same as a 19 inch 4:3 monitor. I have to I somehow thought this could be bigger, but it looks bigger than it’s caused by the extra horizontal space. Running in full 1080p is nice, too. The resolution is crisp and beautiful. Colors are pretty good and in general picture quality is good, though not stellar. After testing the monitor on monitor testing sites, I am not completely sure how most of a difference the advertised 2ms answer time makes. This is another instance where that number may or may not mean much, and testing the monitor is hard without something to compare it to.

But all this is knit picking. I could be more than happy with this buy except for one feature that just leaves me anxious over if or not I should return it and attempt a different model out: looking at ANGLE. This model has a poor looking at angle. Granted, I’m coming from a CRT where looking at angle wasn’t really an issue. But looking at the monitor from just a somewhat up or down angle makes a big difference in contrast, and the horizontal angle looks equally poor. It is not atrociously poor, but poor enough to make me wonder if or not I can live with it. It’s certainly NOT satisfactory considering the ADVERTISED looking at angle is 160 degrees v/h (who knows how they came up with that number, but I think about it false advertising). I should also talk about that I’m writing this review from work on a Samsung SyncMaster 943ewx, and this monitor has a great looking at angle, nearly as good as a CRT, so I do have many kind of point of reference. The looking at angle is worse than any of the three laptops in my home, one of which is around eight years old! To compound this disadvantage, the monitor stand doesn’t let for up and down motion. To change it to eye level you’ll have to put it on a phone book or something. Unfortunate that one big kink should stand in my way of feeling like I made a smart purchase.

I greatly recommend you go into a store and look at monitors up close before purchasing. If you can not do this, then purchase two or more models, attempt them out side by side, keep the one you like the most and return the others. You’ll be out the return shipping, sure, but it beats having to purchase one monitor individually and wonder if or not it is a good purchase and possibly having to pay for return shipping anyway if you are unhappy. At least this way you know you have the monitor you want. As well, this is the only real way to compare monitors, because the controlled conditions of a store do not really let you to test and compare monitors, nor use up any concurrent with them doing your daily tasks.

Overall, this is a good value model, particularly for this screen size, but it does sacrifice in at least one important area.
