5.0 out of five stars Phenomenal, April 8, 2010
By Parka (Singapore) See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER) This review is from: Dell UltraSharp U2711 27 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor Max Resolution 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) (Personal Computers) I have had this monitor for a month now and I have to say that it is phenomenal. I used the Dell 2405FPW for five years till the U2711 has been released, nearly agreeing the resolution of the 30 inch (2560 by 1600), at nearly half the price. It is a bargain.

The resolution is remaining at 2560 by 1440. Yes, there is 160 pixels missing from the bottom in comparison to a common 30 inch, but coming up from 1920 by 1200 it does not really matter.

The colours are vibrant, which is great. The text is a bit smaller, of a size you usually see on 13 inch laptops. It took me a while to get used to the smaller font size.

This set is still non glossy. But seemingly, Dell applied many anti glare covering. I have read on forums that many customers disliked it but I have no problem with it I did not detect it was there.

Compared to a 24 inch (1920 by 1200px), the U2711 is not much taller, it is much wider. I can fit two webpages, 1024px each, and still be able to see icons on the desktop.

Backlight bleeding is barely obvious. It means if your widescreen movies still show the letterbox black bars, you will be less distracted.

The U2711 also works well with my PS3 via HDMI. I am not sure of the audio potential but I use a 2.1 speaker plugged in with a 3.5mm jack. One thing be aware of is you will have to set the audio settings on your PS3 to output 2.1 sound to be sure they output all the sound, dialogue, effects, surround, etc.

Gaming on the PS3 is enjoyable. The games are upscaled and there is a notch of graininess. Not really an issue unless you are sitting really close. Everything looks snappy and I do not notice any lag but I am do not really play FPS games.

Note that this monitor could require a decent graphics card with dual DVI output. If you want to game at the maximum resolution, then you need a powerful card.

This is a big physical monitor. My table is really small and it took up nearly half of it. But not regrets.

I managed to get this LCD at US$690 equivalent in Asia, Singapore. It is well worth it. This set is going to last me for a long time, till the slimmer LED variant comes out in who knows which year.

I could recommend this monitor to graphic designers, photographers or anybody who multi task many.

For Mac Users

I’m using this on a Mac Pro and powered it on two graphic card, not both simultaneously. It is plug and play, no drivers obliged.

On the ATI Radeon X1900XT, you will not be able to see the dual boot screen if you hold Alt after the startup (that’s if you are using Boot Camp). On the ATI Radeon 4870, it works just flawlessly.

For technical reviews, just visit the links in my comment section. I found and used them while researching on the U2711.

Update: 21 Jul 2011

After a year or my Dell monitor started having light flicker. It looks to influence just the DVI (both ports). I called up Dell and they sent me a substitute (refurbished) monitor the next day to my doorstep. Did not lose any downtime. Excellent service.

3.0 out of five stars Overly violent anti glare covering, October 19, 2010
By Amba (Palo Alto, CA) See all my reviews This review is from: Dell UltraSharp U2711 27 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor Max Resolution 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) (Personal Computers) I had to give U2711 to my colleague and get back to U2410 as the anti glare covering on the U2711 is a big overkill for text work (I usually work with text). It’s most likely nice for photo editing, as it’ll kill all the reflections and glare, but it renders text fuzzy and white background looks low contrast and fuzzy.
As much as I dislike glossy displays, same panel on Apple’s 27″ makes for better text contrast and easy reading, when you see your reflection in the screen.

I wish it was 19:10 format (say 2400×1500)

3.0 out of five stars Beware the anti glare covering, January 17, 2011
By B. Lee See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Dell UltraSharp U2711 27 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor Max Resolution 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) (Personal Computers) First, full disclosure: I have tried this monitor with a couple macs. Also overall I am a big fan of Dell monitors, I have two now at home (where I do many of photo image processing) and I have had nothing but Dell monitors at work for many years (where I do scientific image processing). I have never had a complaint about their monitors, overall the Ultrasharp series are great quality for a great price.

On to this monitor: I have had two of these now, and while I really like the size and resolution I think I am going to give up. The 1st one had some bad pixels, pretty bad backlight bleedthrough in one corner (and obvious in all four corners) and one black corner. (How do you get a corner to bleedthrough when it is black and be black when it is light?) On that one the top level of the screen also seemed to not fit quite right, it could make a pop sound when I tried to clean the screen like it moved or warped. The second one had more serious backlight bleedthough in only one corner, , then one spot along the top of the screen. It was observable in normal computer use, not just black scenes. So either I am very unlucky or the quality control is just not what it should be. None of the other Dell monitors I have used have had a single bad pixel or this level of bleedthrough.

And then there is the really puzzling anti glare covering. It is not a matte finish like the other Dell monitors I have had, it is more coarse and kind of sparkly. When the screen is bright it is really annoying, when there is any room light it makes the screen look washed out. It is intolerable for photo editing, which is what I got this monitor for it makes my pictures look noisy and speckled. And again, all of this is compared to other Dell monitors. I’d never considered to get a glossy screen for photo editing before looking at photos on this screen, but that could be better than this. Best could be a matte finish like their older monitors had.

I got this monitor for photo editing due to resolution, size, and color calibration. But the uneven backlight & bleedthrough and sparkly covering make it completely unsuitable for that. I guess it is going back.

A couple updates:

First: I bought this direct from Dell, and I’d have to say their buyer service is so bad that I am not sure how they stay in business. I will not bore you with the details (what I am writing here it a tiny fraction but already more than enough) you may be able to find many stories across the web about the some number of hour long calls with infinite transfers till someone accidentally hangs up on you. Count on any interaction with them taking some number of hours spread out over some days before you end up talking to a US established rep who can really do something (several of the abroad reps told me outright that they aren’t authorized to do anything other than charge you more money or move you).

Anyway, when I got to a US established rep when I called about the problems with the second monitor, he said no problem just return it and they’d issue a full refund. Quite nice of them I thought. Only they never issued the refund, and when I’d call or email nobody could ever help. I had to take it up with my credit card company, and they issued a full refund after looking over the tracking info and (with me on the line) talking to a Dell rep who was so unhelpful that the bank rep hung up on him. They gave Dell something like 45 days to react, which Dell never did, so the refund became permanent. After that Dell contacted me again asking if it was ok for them to charge me again now that the bank issued me refund. (?!?) The bank/credit card company was really _very_ unhappy that Dell contacted me again after the fact, saying that it violated their contract with the credit card company, and insisted that Dell not contact me again. (Which they haven’t.) So yeah, Dell looks barely working these days both by quality control and buyer service. That is a bad mix.

Second, in case anyone’s wondering if the U3011 has these same problems (I was): I am using a Dell U3011 part of the time at work now. It has the same annoying anti glare covering, but the backlight uniformity looks much better. As well, since the pixels are bigger on the U3011, you are not tempted to sit as close, so I do not notice the antiglare covering on it as much it gives me the impression that it is not as bad, but I think it is just that I am sitting more away. I still think it could bother me when it came to photo editing, and I do not think I’d get one for that, but in other use it is not that obvious.

4.0 out of five stars Crisp text, but., January 8, 2011
By J. Elliott (Southern California) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: HP 2511x 25 Inch LED Monitor Black (Personal Computers) This is my 1st attempt at LED display monitors. My five year old Samsung was to get a bit dim, so after reading many of reviews and looking at many monitors in stores, my 1st choice was the top rated Samsung BX2450. Unfortunately, there were too many problems with that monitor: The display was somewhat tilted to one side on its stand, with the right edge about 1/4″ lower than the left; no adjustable looking at angle; shaky stand; overly sensitive control buttons; and a pronounced ‘sweet spot’ for looking at. So I sent it back. I read about the HP2511x on line, and ordered it from to attempt out.

Mechanically, the HP is far superior to the Samsung easy assembly, secure fit of parts; optional wall mounting kit; clear information. The base is adjustable for tilt, but not for height. The control buttons are working and have a nice tactile feedback, unlike the Samsung. The four presets for movies, text, photos, and gaming are pretty useful. The menu system is intuitive, and it’s easy to change the light down to 50 the screen was much too bright for my tastes when it has been unpacked.

For black text on a white background, image quality is good, particularly when compared side by side with my old fluorescent tube backlit Samsung. Text is clear and sharp, with no ghosting or color fringing on the edges. Running the text at 150 magnification as default text size in IE7 it’s superior to the old non LED monitor. The black background screen on start up/boot is uniformly deep black, with only a slight total of backlight bleed along the bottom edge. White background screens are bright and usually pretty uniform. But, unlike the old non LED Samsung, but like the LED Samsung BX2450, the HP has looking at angle issues, which are particularly noticable on white background screens.

They aren’t as bad as the Samsung, and the sweet spot for looking at is more forgiving. But when the monitor is on the desk at the ergonomically suggested height relative to your eyes, the bottom of the screen has a blue cast, and the icons on IE7 task bar have lighter blues and washed out yellows, while the top of the screen has a much warmer look, particularly with a white background. Standing at the desk while talking on the phone and reaching down to type something, the white background becomes agua, and the text is hard to read.

Likewise, moving your head more than a couple inches sideways from the screen center will make the monitor appear warmer at the edge you’re moving from, and cooler at the edge you’re moving towards. Again, it’s nowhere almost as pronounced as the Samsung, but still obvious. The only solution I have found is to elevate the monitor 2+ inches above the desk. This places the center of the screen at eye level, and improves the color and tint issues at the bottom of the screen. It isn’t ideal, but much improved for image quality. What that means long term for my back and neck remains to be seen.

I have an ASUS laptop with LED that’s worse as far as this sweet spot effect, and looked at some LED monitors in stores, and have finished that this looks to be a feature of LED monitors better in many than others. It’s interesting be aware of that at three different stores, the LED monitors were all at eye level or above, while the non LED models were typically below eye level.

With movies or HDTV input from my tuner card the above issue isn’t obvious, most likely because I’m not moving my head as much as when I’m using text and looking at reference books, writing notes, or answering the phones. Movies/TV are decent picture quality, with just a slight color saturation weakness in comparison to my Sony 42″ TV. Photos are sharp and clear, but it’s somewhat easier to notice color shifts when moving your head around while using photoshop.

Games are clear and bright, and typically so fast paced that the comparatively small color changing problem isn’t noticed. The comparatively slow 5ms answer hasn’t been an issue so far on the games my son tried on this machine to assess the monitor.

I should point out that my HP Quad core AMD computer is only a year old, and used an ASUS Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics card when I bought the HP2511x. I have since upgraded to an ASUS NVidia ENGTS450 TOP Graphics card. This sped things up in many applications, and possibly somewhat improved graphics quality and color saturation in other programs, but without doing side by side comparisons, it’s impossible to say; the difference is minor, if present.

I can use this monitor, and the improved text quality is appreciated over the non LED monitors I used or saw in stores. But, the sweet spot issue, while better than most of the other LED monitors I viewed, was just annoying enough to drop a star off of my ranking.

5.0 out of five stars As good as monitors costing more. Maybe better., January 7, 2011
By doach “Doach” (Clearwater, Fl) See all my reviews This review is from: HP 2511x 25 Inch LED Monitor Black (Personal Computers) I own a Apple 21.5 inch imac, My wife owns a 27 inch imac. I also got a HP elite six core monster hooked up to a HP 2509m which I like. I got this monitor because of my current monitor for my PC the HP 2509M and it is remarkable display.

Now I know the HP 2511 is not supposed to look as good as my wife’s 27 inch imac, but it does.I called HP Tech support and they told me this panel is a S PVA display. IPS is supposed to be better than S PVA, but by looking at my wifes 27inch imac, which has a yellow hue to the screen, the HP 2511 looks better, the whites are whiter and the blacks are blacker. No black light bleed, no dead or stuck pixels. Colors. This panel just plain looks better.

I have the side by side in dual mode with my imac 21.5 inch and use this as my major display and i couldn’t be happier. I could give this monitor six stars if I could.

By ALFA66 “alfa66″ (sj ca usa) See all my reviews () This review is from: HP 2511x 25 Inch LED Monitor Black (Personal Computers) If you’re thinking about to get the 2509m be sure that you do not pay $300, because for $300 you may be able to get the next generation monitor from HP.
I was about to purchase the 2509m model from HP, which I really liked.
Just before the holidays I saw that HP released this new variant of their 25″ monitor and the specifications looked good.
I ordered the 2511x from and . It is a beauty !
The image is so crisp, and the colors are great.
I was worried about the light (specs rated it at 250 vs 300 of the last model) but this monitor has lots of light.
Highly suggested.

5.0 out of five stars Works great with Macbook Pro, January 18, 2011
By KP See all my reviews Looked at many monitors with reasonable color gamut in the 27 30 inch size which could be matched with my late 2008 15 inch Macbook Pro (5,1). Major uses are photography, web design and general office productivity (office, writing papers, electronic medical records). I looked at the NEC 3090 series and the NEC and Dell 27 inch monitors also. I have experience with the Barco and Eizo monitors at work in the radiology department (where the is the sporadic Dell). Here are the things that sooner or later sold me on this monitor.

1. Comes with displayport. This is big on a Mac. It was easy to use a mini displayport to displayport cable (about $15) to get the monitor working with my Macbook Pro. Full resolution off the bat with no sleep/wake issues, no software to install. There are many serious issues using DVI D with the 2560×1600 screen resolutions on both the movable and desktop macs. Not the fault of the monitors, but the fault of Apple and their implementation of video cards. You could use up hours online reading about the problems with cables and adapters. Nobody looks to be able to get them to work reliably. Check the NEC site for the new as they posted technical bulletins on this subject and things may changed. Price of the monitor wasn’t an issue for me, but the possible time trouble shooting problems was. I hate computer maintenance and trouble shooting (which is why I am on a Mac and wish I could ditch all the PC’s in the office).

2. Good color gamut, comes reasonably calibrated, easy to calibrate more with an x Rite eye one display 2. That IPS technology is heads and shoulders above TN screens for any serious photography work goes without saying. Covers a good part of the Adobe RGB spectrum (and all of the S RGB spectrum). As of early 2011, the mac OS isn’t able of twelve bit color from end to end (OS, software, hardware, output) so to some extent, you can not use all the potential of the hardware calibration of the NEC Spectraview system now in time. People get pretty obsessed about this kind of stuff, but the bottom line is that majority pictures are seen on computer screens which have never been calibrated and won’t be as good as this Dell (or the NEC) nor can you control the lighting conditions under which someone will view one of your prints. On the side from the most calling for color accurate uses (you’re making commercials for coke, printing good art for sale), this monitor will get you 99 of the way to where you have to be. Nobody will ever notice the last 1 (unless they are a geek on a photog forum with lots of spare time). If you really need the best in color management and have the hardware that can take benefit of this, go with the NEC, Eizo or another high end screen.

3. Lots of connection alternatives. USB, speakers, HDMI/DVI D (I do not use), etc. Many may think about it sacrilege to have these kinds of connections on a professional monitor. I think about it convenient. Less cable clutter.

4. Price. Not cheap, but it’s about $1000 less than the NEC which uses the same panel, but different hardware (in fact all the high end 30 inch IPS panels come from the same manufacturer). Typically may be found for between $1150 1300.

5. Screen isn’t too big. I sit with my face about 2 3 feet from the screen. No neck problems so far. I do like the added screen hight that 1600 pixels gives you. Works well with the conventional 3:2 slr format. As well, by the time you add the menu bar and many of the control panels in Lightroom or Photoshop, you tend to loose many of working space on the widescreen (16:9) type monitors. I did not like the feeling that I worked on a panorama the whole time. I worried that I could have to sit miles back, but this isn’t the case. No real drop off in light and the looking at angle is good.

This is a much better choice if you considered an Apple 27 inch display Apple has a much, much inferior color gamut, reflective screen which may be an issue in bright rooms, alike price and lack of other connection alternatives make the Apple somewhat restricted. The Dell really was plug and play for me.

Hope this review helps and saves you many time (esp. If you have a Macbook Pro). Hard to go wrong with the Dell or NEC.

PS No difficulties with Mid 2008 13 inch Macbook Pro. Somewhat of a surprise due to integrated graphics, but no glitches. Full resolution with the minidisplayport to displayport adapter.

5.0 out of five stars almost perfect monitor., November 13, 2010
By Joe Blow “Joe Blow” (San Francisco, CA United States) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () An excellent monitor. The colors are perfect, the resolution is the highest you may be able to purchase now at the 30 inch size (I surely wish someone could break through the 2560×1600 resolution barrier at this size). The monitor is much lighter and produces little heat compared to the Apple 30 inch LCD I have had for about five years. The image quality is only a small improvement over the now old Apple 30 inch. So it is not a useful upgrade if you already have the Apple monitor. About the only thing I can think of that may be improved (without changing the basic specifications of the device) is the startup time, which is about 15 seconds. The monitor is calibrated before shipping and a calibration report is provided with the monitor. One small complaint is that the monitor’s bezel is rather lightweight plastic and the look of the monitor on the side from the real panel is not that remarkable. I have not tried the fitted scaler so far, so I can not comment on that, but testing labs have said it’s quite nice. As well, my nVidia GTX 470 has no displayport, so I have not tested that either. The refresh rate is not blazing fast, but so far it handled gaming also or better than any other monitor I have used (but I have not tested the gaming particular panels). The blacks are about as good as they may be and the good matte surface is a good balance of sharpness while suppressing annoying reflections. I have a window behind me which can lead to unpleasant reflections in the early afternoon, but this monitor handles those about also as I think is possible. I guess the biggest negative is the price. This monitor costs as much now as I paid for my one of a kind Apple when it was 1st released. This is five to six years afterward and every other size of monitor available (including many good 27 inchers) dropped off a cliff, but not this monitor. It should be priced maybe 30 less than it’s at current.

5.0 out of five stars costly but worth it, December 1, 2010
By S. Eckert See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) Out of stock here? I bought mine direct from Dell, three year exchange warranty and the same price with seasonal discount, delivered free inside a week.

I’ll let others go on about the technical details, but I have never been happier with a monitor. When shopping, I had trouble figuring out why this one was more than the HP variant. They sell the same screen with inferior electronics (which will not scale pictures, do not have RGB and VGA inputs, etc) for a somewhat lower price. Without monitor scaling, as this one DOES have, you may not be able to see the computer’s boot sequence without a separate monitor. Check out the array of inputs and you will understand the price difference. It comes with a dual link DVI cable that worked using my present EVGA/NVidia 9500GT video card. Vista automagically went to full res when I plugged it in. For watching movies in another room, I bought a 50′ VGA extension cable ($29 at Frys), which is plugged into the video card’s other output. Same screen, different input port, still more pixels than HD using VGA and a 50′ cable! it is light enough to carry easily from room to room. The tilt/swivel/elevate stand feels a bit bouncy but it does not tip over.

By the way.. it is BIG! I went from a 21″ CRT running 1600×1280 to this one with twice the pixels and more than twice the viewable area. High res on that old monitor was on occasion a problem because fixed pixel icons may be too small, but this percentage of size to resolution looks “right”. That old monitor was state of the art Sony Trinitron unix workstation stuff when it was new. This monitor’s colors are far more vivid, blacks are far more black, everything as you could expect. Except maybe the looking at angle: when I stand up there is a pretty bad change in image and I can notice the difference across the screen when I line my head up with one edge and look over toward the other edge from 2′ away. I think the light is great, others think it is too much. I suppose it depends if you sit beside a big sliding glass door like I do!
